VRBA wrote a letter opposing the proposed moratorium on rezonings (new housing) in View Royal, which ended in a tie vote and was therefore defeated.

Here is the letter:

Dear Mayor and Council,

New Business: Imposition of a Six Month Moratorium on Rezoning

The Victoria Residential Builders Association strongly opposes a moratorium on rezoning and new development.

There has been no consultation with industry and the impact a moratorium will have on planned developments, including costs, employment and housing supply.

View Royal’s planning staff provide professional advice to council on issues involving strategic planning, growth, environment, rezonings and Official Community Plan. In addition, rezonings are already subject to public hearings and must be approved by council.

A moratorium is unnecessary and will only add to the shortage in housing and a lack of affordability.

Also, a moratorium is contrary to the spirit and intent of the Ministry of Housing’s recent announcement to address housing supply and affordability.
