Considering a renovation? Before you start, visit https://www.vrba.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/asbestos_hazards_homeowners.pdf and read the online brochure on asbestos often found in older homes.

This is important to protect your family and workers. Our advice is to hire professional contractors, which is also the advice of BC’s Ministry of Environment.

You can receive competitive quotes for your renovation from VRBA’s qualified contractors by using our Expression of Interest Form at https://www.vrba.ca/hire-a-vrba-member/.

Our membership includes Hazpro Environmental at www.hazpro.org which assesses and removes hazardous materials like asbestos.

The BC govt has announced a review of regulations on asbestos including new licensing of contractors and consultants, certification of workers and testing labs.

They are also considering an incentive/rebate program to help consumers with the cost of safe asbestos removal.

VRBA has strongly advocated for an incentive program to protect homeowners and promote health and safety.

Govt has some obligation to assist with asbestos mitigation. The Canadian govt supported the use of asbestos in homes for decades.

In the 1970’s and 80’s, the Canadian Home Insulation Program (CHIP) offered grants for installation of asbestos insulation such as Zonolite. In 1984, the federal govt established The Asbestos Institute to promote the use of asbestos.

The federal govt should be partnering with all provinces to create financial support programs.

The creation of asbestos mitigation standards is important, but no less important is assisting homeowners with addressing a hazard previously approved and even subsidized by govt.

You can support an incentive program by contacting LCS.LABOUR@gov.bc.ca by Feb 15 at 4 pm. There is more info at https://engage.gov.bc.ca/govtogetherbc/consultation/asbestos-practices-phase-two/
